The Golden Frog Saloon in Fountain City, WI

The Golden Frog is one of our local picks for a good fish dinner, shrimp, and traditional Wisconsin favorites. Locals simply call it the Frog. It’s a comfortable place to eat, with a history going all the way back to 1878.

Fish, Shrimp, and Other Favorites

The fish is a good reason to stop at the Frog. You can order it battered and fried or broiled throughout the week, not just on Friday.

I usually order the shrimp, but I’ve also had their tenderloin tips, and they’re very good. According to their menu, the tips are available from 11:30 a.m. until closing. They also serve broasted chicken, burgers, frog legs, and other favorites.

Friday nights are known for all-you-can-eat specials, including battered shrimp, fish and shrimp, and BBQ ribs. Sunday mornings bring breakfast and a Bloody Mary bar.

Outdoor Dining and Room for a Gathering

One of the nice things about the Frog is its outdoor seating during the summer. It’s spacious and comfortable, and a pleasant place to sit down for a meal.

I’ve eaten outside and also attended a gathering with a very large group in their dining room. The service was excellent on both occasions.

Whether you’re stopping for a casual meal or getting together with a larger group, the Frog has options beyond the usual bar seating.

A Saloon With a Long Story

William Kruer built the Golden Frog in 1878, originally calling it Zum Goldenen Frosch. A large tin frog once hung over the entrance.

During the logging days, and later when farmers brought cattle down to the river for shipping, people cashed their checks at a teller’s cage inside the tavern.

The building even had a German beer garden and a duckpin bowling alley at one time.

It’s an interesting piece of Fountain City’s history that’s still serving food today.
